Merry Christmas everyone! I can’t believe it’s December already - I haven’t even thought about my Christmas shopping yet, never mind started it! I have just been too busy….

This month I have done two photo shoots, and I absolutely loved every minute! I’ve been collaborating with the same photographer since the summer now and we work really well together, bouncing so many ideas off each other and getting inspired! A few weeks ago we did our first studio shoot with a theme based around the Indian Spring/Summer celebration, Holi. I really played around with the make-up and with watercolour paints. I made up four models in total, using one of each primary colours for the first shots and using a mash-up of red, green, blue and yellow on the fourth model. It was very messy but lots of fun!

What do you think? Which is your favourite? I love how our model for the colour blue looks so fierce in one image and then really soft in the other. Make-up and good direction from an experienced photographer can really change the feel of the image, and it’s so exciting to see it all come together.

I’ve also been developing my designs and ideas for the three main characters in this year’s local panto production - Dick Whittington. I’m responsible for making up Tommy the cat, the evil King Rat, and the lovely (but clumsy!) Fairy Bling. I wish I could show you the images but I’m not allowed to until Panto starts, so watch this space. I think you’ll love Fairy Bling, whose look is inspired by the cast of TOWIE - as you can imagine this means lots of glitter, fake lashes and nails, and of course we can’t forget the fake tan!

Next week sees my first in-house nail and nail art competition with my NVQ Level 3 Nail learners. We have an in-house judge who will be judging the finished result, and then two external judges from industry who will judge the entire process. I have chosen not to judge as I’ve been helping the girls with their preparation so it would be unfair. But I will be there throughout the day to support them and ensure all competition rules are adhered to fully. I’m hoping this will help me decide who to enter into next year’s UK Skills competition. Yale performed brilliantly at regional level so I’m hoping to match that with this year’s group who are proving to be little stars in their own right already.

So to wrap up I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year, with lots of good food, good company and fantastic presents!

It’s hard to believe we’re coming up to Christmas already! One of the reasons I love this time of year is the party hair. It’s so cool to get a chance to play around with hair up styles. Though I must admit it’s the quick ones I love the best! Any hair up that takes under 15 minutes is a winner to me. Take this one we did at the salon last week - it’s so easy. It’s basically just a twisted French Plait tucked in and then each section pulled out a little to give it that soft texture. Why not try it?!

I always like to write a bit about colour and this time it’s a client I’ve been getting really excited about! Her name is Charlotte - she’s totally bonkers and I love her for it! She walked in the salon one day with long highlighted hair and said ‘I want it short and I want it blue!’ Well, isn’t that every hairdresser’s dream?! I use a brand called ‘Crazy Colour’ after bleaching her hair to white. Here are some of the mad combinations we have being doing over the last few months!

So what else is happening this month? Despite the cold I’ve been doing a shoot for a furniture company in a manor house just outside of London. It wasn’t paid but it was so much fun and great experience to build up my portfolio!

I’m really happy with the final pictures though I’m always critical of my work after. I would have liked the waves in the hair to be stronger. But this is what growing is all about… How boring would life be if there was no room for improvement?

Here’s my favourite photo from the shoot:

The most exciting thing this month has been our launch of the Brooks and Brooks ‘Finishing School’ next year. We are currently writing the most intense program for graduates or people reaching the end of their training. It teaches precision, poise and most of all it teaches how to make hair elegant. Clients notice everything, from the way you carry out your service to how well a haircut grows out or a colour lasts. There has never been a course like this before and I’m loving writing it!

Enjoy your Christmas guys - I’m off snowboarding! J

Sam's Beauty Blog - November 2012

sam image1Well it's been a busy month in my world of make-up and nails... After returning to college back in September I have spent the last seven weeks guiding my learners through the first half of the winter term, which has flown by! I'm really excited to say that many of them have passed their initial skills assessment and are ready to work on clients in our commercial salon. My Level 3 nails learners are ready to move onto UV Gel after mastering Liquid & Powder enhancements, and I'm so proud of them for progressing so quickly.

sam image4 2We've also been working on advanced nail artistry techniques such as creating 3D structures like bows and flowers, embedding various mediums such as glitter, lace and colour blending, which they love. Many of them treated themselves to the new CND additives kit whilst at the G-mex show earlier this month so we're all itching to have a play with them when we return from our break!
Talking about the G-mex show, when we arrived we made a beeline for the Sweet Squared stand and met the lovely Samuel Sweet (founder of Sweet Squared and www.salongeek.com). Some of the girls were a little starstruck by him as he is such a well-respected figure in the nails industry! We even had a photo taken with him before watching various Shellac and enhancement demos, which were amazing. I was so inspired I treated myself to the latest Shellac collection and created my own designs on my toes complete with a few Swarovski crystals!

sam image4 1Do you remember that during the summer I worked on a photoshoot to create an image for Scratch Magazine's Shoot-Out competition? Well, my image was published in this month's issue! It's so exciting to see my work in such a highly regarded magazine that I can't wait for next year's competition now, and I'm definitely going to encourage my learners to get involved! But before they do I've planned a college competition which takes place on December 5th. The theme is 'Fantasy', and I have been so impressed by their ideas. They've already started working on their mood boards and I'm loving their enthusiasm and passion – it's so exciting for me to see them get excited about nails and artistry. So keep an eye out for December's blog because I'll be showcasing the results of their hard work.
I worked on another photoshoot this month, with my favourite photographer Sue McGrane again.

The inspiration for this shoot was autumn, which is my favourite season because of all the beautiful, warm colours. I used MUA, Illamasqua and Urban Decay for the make-up, with focus on the eyes and in stunning ochre, mustard and deep green shades. For the nails I used the latest Shellac colours: Gold VIP Status layered above Sugared Spice and Faux Fur. I then burnished yellow and red additives onto these shades to create gold finishes, topped with gold leaf to complete the autumnal look. I called the shoot 'Fallspiration' and we used a stunning model called Skyla who produced some beautiful shots. Check them out on my portfolio here: http://www.samantharaybould.tumblr.com

My next shoot is going to be a sultry beauty shoot in the studio, which will make a nice change from working on location. I still need to source a model, but I can't wait to stretch my skills even further. The next location shoot will be part of my ongoing collaborative project inspired by birds, so watch this space!

Sophia's Hair Blog - November 2012

Hello PV fans! I had a mad discovery this month - a new technique that is going to change my life! I went to Norway with Diva Professional Styling to teach some new waving techniques and demo some tools. One tool in particular is this new tong.
sophia pic 1
It's called the 'Beach curls wand', and strange as it may look it's designed to make soft curls, perfect for the beach. However, when one of the students decided to try a new way of holding the tool, we found something completely new... A perfect Marcel wave, with no effort!
Here it is on the doll's head.

sophia pic 2

It's created by taking long pieces of hair, wrapping the hair around the tool and holding it horizontally. Then just let go and hey presto, Marcel waves in minuets! I can't believe it! It's going to save me so much time.

In other news, I went to see the Tribute Show in London. It's where up to five of the best hairdressers in the county put on an education show in the fancy west end! Angelo Seminara used the 'flocking' like in wallpaper (which is lots of tiny fibres being sprayed at a sticky surface) on hair! Just look how cool this picture is... It's not hair colour. It's sprayed on fibre around masking tape! Amazing.

Lastly, whatever you do in hairdressing whether you're a student or a teacher sometimes it's easy to forget why you're doing it. Sometimes we are working so hard we forget to remember why we started. This week we had a big night at the salon where each of the assistants did a presentation on why they work for Brooks and Brooks. It was really emotional and made me think perhaps we all should stop what we're doing every now and then and remember our goals. I know that's what I'll be doing this week.

PS I'm now on Twitter, with even more industry updates: @sophiahilton01
