The countdown to the revised EYFS has begun, with the start of weekly updates on the Foundation Years website to help early years practitioners prepare for the new framework.

A new countdown button on the website’s home page will provide regular updates on changes to the framework in the run-up to the publication of the EYFS, which is expected at the end of March.

Launching the ‘countdown button’ of the Foundation Years website at the Nursery World Show in London this morning, Sue Robb, head of early years at 4Children, said, ‘In the weeks running up to the publication, we want to alert early years practitioners to where they will find all the information and resources they need to get ready for the new framework which is expected in the spring so they can start thinking through changes from day one.’

Apprentice 540
Marking National Apprenticeship Week the Prime Minister David Cameron today announced a new round of Government funding to support thousands of apprenticeships up to degree equivalent, helping deliver the world class skills firms need to drive growth.

From today, businesses and training providers can bid for a share of £6m from the Higher Apprenticeship Fund, which will support the development of thousands of new Higher Apprenticeships in sectors including aerospace, energy and renewable technologies.

The Prime Minister also opened the bidding for the new Employer Ownership pilot, inviting employers in England to apply to access up to £250m of public investment and secure more control over how skills training is designed and delivered.

He also announced that from this week, small firms will be offered an incentive of £1,500 to hire their first young apprentices. This is expected to support up to 40,000 new apprenticeships over the next year.

Childcare: Mothers 'fear playgroup cliques'

Mothers in deprived areas are put off from playgroups by fears about cliques of other mothers - or because they think they are not from the "right social class", research suggests.

A study from Bristol University has been trying to find out why families most in need of help are often the least likely to use children's centres.

Worries about not fitting in were claimed to be more important than cost.

Children are continuing to do better at school at the end of the EYFS, the latest statistics for the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile show.

The number of children achieving a good level of development by the end of the Reception year has risen from 56 per cent in 2010 to 59 per cent this year.

Sue Robb, 4 Children’s head of early years, (pictured), said, ‘In number terms, another 18,000 more children are achieving a good level of development. I feel the results are a real achievement for the sector. The upward trend is continuing and it shows that the investment in early years is paying off. All children have improved and the gap has narrowed as well.’ Read more...
