Marking National Apprenticeship Week the Prime Minister David Cameron today announced a new round of Government funding to support thousands of apprenticeships up to degree equivalent, helping deliver the world class skills firms need to drive growth. 

From today, businesses and training providers can bid for a share of £6m from the Higher Apprenticeship Fund, which will support the development of thousands of new Higher Apprenticeships in sectors including aerospace, energy and renewable technologies.

The Prime Minister also opened the bidding for the new Employer Ownership pilot, inviting employers in England to apply to access up to £250m of public investment and secure more control over how skills training is designed and delivered.

He also announced that from this week, small firms will be offered an incentive of £1,500 to hire their first young apprentices. This is expected to support up to 40,000 new apprenticeships over the next year.

Teenagers building a career in construction

Students who are interested in taking up a career in the construction industry had the opportunity to learn about the trade from the team behind a new state-of-the-art hospital in Whitley.

VINCI Construction UK teamed up with the Construction Youth Trust, a charity that supports young people pursue their careers, and 30 Year 12 students from Prospect School, Blessed Hugh Faringdon Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre, Reading College and John Madejski Academy, to give them an insight into the trade.

The students, who are all studying science, technology, environment and maths (STEM) learned about the professional side of construction from young speakers who already worked in the industry.

Minister to launch Product Safety Conference

The Electrical Safety Council (ESC) has announced the line-up of speakers for its second Product Safety Conference in October.

The conference, which will be held at Church House Conference Centre in Westminster, London, on Wednesday, 26th October - still has a few delegate places available and looks set to be a key event in the product safety calendar.

Ed Davey, Minister for Consumer Policy and Consumer affairs at the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), will launch the event, where speakers will include:  Ron Gainsford OBE, chief executive, Trading Standards Institute; Richard Lawson, head of technical regulation, BIS; Christine Heemskerk, vice-chair, TSI Council; and Kevin Harris, chair of BEAMA’s Anti-Counterfeiting Group.

Presentations will also be made by internationally renowned expert, Dr Nick Carey, the UK’s Fire and Rescue Services’ electrical fires expert; Arnold Pindar, chair of the National Consumer Federation and president of ANEC - the European consumer voice in standardisation; and a representative from the British Retail Consortium.

RICS launches property, land and construction qualifications

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has developed seven new qualifications in property, land and construction.



These new qualifications will enable those with work experience but without a university education to build a career in the property industry by offering them specialised knowledge in the fields of commercial property management, valuation, building surveying, building control, land and engineering surveying, hydrographic surveying and residential property management.

By completing their qualification, the applicants will attain the RICS Associate membership and will have the option of further studying towards full Chartered Surveyor status.

Heidi Shankster, director of the RICS, explained in more detail: "If you are currently working in the property, land and construction industry, you can join RICS and start working towards your qualification now. If you have four years' relevant work experience or an appropriate vocational qualification, plus a period of work experience, you may already be eligible for assessment.
